Control of Senkakus/Daiyoutai

The ownership of the Senkaku/ Daiyoutai islands has been contested over the years between Japan and China. Japan has had control over the area for most of the century while China claims it was stolen by the Japanese and the Chinese had controlled it in the past. Japan counterclaims that China never really cared about the islands until hydrocarbons were discovered in the late 60's early 70's.
