Is Marriage important in modern society?

is marriage still important in modern society? it use to be men and woman would get married because society would throw anyone out with the garbage who so much as thought about premarital sex but now with the increased frequency of "1 night stands" and people caring less & less about "waiting for marriage" does marriage play a big enough role to be worth the trouble. if two people love each other do they need a piece of paper?
