the problem, the way I see it

From the perspective of a student of medicine.

marijuana and alcohol are both harmful. Alcohol is harmful mostly to the liver, whereas marijuana is harmful mostly to the brain. When consumed in large amounts on a regular basis, alcohol does significant damage to the liver; it is also addictive in this case (the person's genetic history plays a role in how addictive it is). As for marijuana, it is more harmful than alcohol even if consumed in small amounts. The reason is that liver cells--which is where alcohol has most of its effects--can regenerate, but brain cells--where marijuana has most of its effects--cannot regenerate (ie, once a brain cell dies, you can never get it back). Marijuana is also more addictive than alcohol by several orders of magnitude. Statistically, many people drink a lot during their late teens/early twenties, but then go on the rest of their lives drinking moderately. However, statistically, people who smoke a lot of marijuana do not go on to doing this only moderately later in life; rather, often, these people's lives go down the drain.

The reason for the drinking age limits is that most people are still developing physiologically until their early twenties, and, when consumed in significant amounts, alcohol and marijuana can interfere with the developmental pathway.

This is from the perspective of a student of pharmacy.

Although marijuana and alcohol are both harmful to some extent, I see nothing wrong with either when consumed in small quantities. As for the statement "Marijuana is...more addictive than alcohol by several orders of magnitude," this is a ridiculous and biased statement. Marijuana is NOT physically addictive, like the nicotine in cigarettes. It can be psychologically addictive, but not nearly as addictive as alcohol, which can be both physically and psychologically addictive. My point is that, if marijuana is illegal, then alcohol should also be illegal; but if alcohol is legal, the marijuana should also be legal. It isn't about health; it's about MONEY. The government makes alcohol legal because of the revenues it generates for them. With pot, it would be hard to generate any taxes to make money on it. The government is stupid; they need to open their eyes. Alcohol causes a great deal more deaths than marijuana; all pot makes me do is drive under the speed limit and chill out, while alcohol can cause one to become out-of-control, to speed on the road, or to become aggressive. 'Nuff said.
