How Do You Know if a Bag is Water Resistant?

During the manufacturing process, water-resistant coatings are applied to bags. However, they wear off over time, and if you don't use the bag in the water, it's useless against liquids. If a bag does not have a waterproof coating, it won't repel water, and the structure or weave of the fabric will not help. For this reason, it's important to purchase water-resistant bags.

To ensure your bag's water resistance, it's important to look for a seam seal. While seam taping can provide a temporary barrier, it will never guarantee water resistance. Waterproof bags are sewn shut, and seam tape isn't waterproof. Neither is seam taping a water-resistant bag by BOTE Board. A bag that's water-resistant is a must-have for any trip.

If you don't see the water-resistance seal, look for an IP code. This code is issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission and is often used by brands when developing their bags. It provides a rough framework for water protection and provides inspiration for designers. The IP Code categorizes bags according to the level of protection against water and intrusion. It attempts to standardize expectations, but the term "waterproof" is somewhat vague.

The best way to determine whether a bag is waterproof is to look at its construction. A bag with a waterproof zipper will not let water in, but a water-resistant bag may not be. A bag with this type of seal will not let water get in because the zippers are difficult to pull. Moreover, a waterproof bag will not hold up to prolonged exposure to the rain, so be sure to look for one that has waterproof zippers.

Drop a glass of water on the bag for testing.
