I will make the statement: "The only reason that Gretzky would be in the top five players of all-time, is that he is the only player in NHL history that was not body checked." If any of the following players were exempt from being hit they would have put up as good or even better numbers than Gretzky: Gilbert Perreault; Marcel Dionne; Guy Lafleur; Mike Bossy; Peter Stastny; Bobby Hull and the list could go on. If the NHL protected Mario Lemieux from being hit like it did Gretzky, Mario would have put up at least one and a half times the numbers that Gretzky did. If Bobby Orr was exempt from body checking like Gretzky was, he would have put up numbers equal to Gretzky as a defenseman. In other words, Gretzky being allowed to roam the ice for the years that he played without having to worry about being hit is "THEE" biggest scam in modern sports.
