How skimpy will womans sports gear get ?

I am interested in what people think about the trend in skimpier gear for woman’s sport. I use a leisure centre where I have noticed several young women who wear very skimpy briefs and a sports bra. Although they cover everything the briefs amount to a thong with most of the buttocks on view. It seems this is a growing trend in sports wear amongst younger women. In the last ten years or so we have seen elite female athletes moving from a vest and gym knickers type kit to skimpy briefs and sports bra tops with the tops getting skimpier. I am wondering if thong briefs will appear and indeed to what extent they are already worn in public places and what people think about the suitability of this minimal clothing look.
