What is a Graven Image?

All Bible-believing Christians, and most other people, will be aware of God's Second Commandment of the Ten Commandments. The second one begins: Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth...thou shalt not bow down to them nor serve them...(NKJV). So God forbids graven images, but what is God forbidding us to do, exactly? This poll is designed to address that question.
1. As a matter of principle, does God forbid us to make any kind of image (for instance, a picture of a lion) or is it merely the worship of such things that God forbids?
God's Second Commandment forbids us to make any images of any living thing
God's Second Commandment forbids only the worship of images - we are free to make them
