Does all of God's creation have a purpose?

In the last few days, a robot space probe called Messenger flew past the planet Mercury. It sent back wonderfully clear pictures and scientific data about that planet.
Unfortunately, it revealed that Mercury is a desolate wasteland. Cratered, barren, utterly lifeless, without air or water, for untold ages it has slowly rotated beneath the pitiless sun, being alternately roasted and frozen, depending on whether it is day or night on that planet.
What would be the purpose of God creating such a world? It appears to be a random, pointless thing, barely visible from Earth. Atheists would say it proves there is no God. What about you?
