A legal jurisdiction has a policy that criminal defendants who appear in court must appear before the judge in their sock feet. Upon arriving at the courthouse, an officer takes their shoes and has them sit in a holding area until their case is called. They then proceed into court in their socks. This has been the standard practice for many years and was never given a thought.
However, this practice has raised the concern that making defendants appear in court shoeless is humiliating and there are those who think it should be discontinued. However, police and court officials say that the practice is necessary due to safety concerns.
