Bible - The word of god or what?

I'm interested in the question of whether or not christians see the bible as god's word, inerrant and infallible, or a book that can be interpreted in many different ways and should not be taken as "gospel". Non christians may take part as well. Here I am looking mainly at genocide and sin.
"Behold, I am driving out from before you the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite. Take heed to yourself, lest you make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land where you are going, lest it be a snare in your midst. But you shall destroy their altars, break their sacred pillars, and cut down their wooden images". Exodus, Chapter 34, verses 11-14 Israelites killed 6 races to take possession of their land. Can genocide be justified if god tells you to do it?
Of course it is - god said it was ok
The Israelites were in danger and had to do it
It was harsh but necessary
There is no way on earth that you can possibly justify genocide
The great flood and the killing of the firstborn of Egypt were carried out by god. These were genocides on a vast scale. Which of the following do you believe
I agree with the many liberal Christians, liberal Jews, historians and biblical archaeologists who believe that all three are religious myths - stories of great spiritual significance about events that never actually happened
I agree with the conservative Jews and christians who believe thart the bible is infallible and inerrant and that the events happened just as they appear in the bible
I find it hard to believe that the killing of the first born appears only in the bible but not in any contemporary writing - they must be false
I don't believe in the bible, god, or the miracles
Revelation, interpreted literally, predicts that a massive genocide will occur at some time in our future, in association with the war of Armageddon and the end of the world as we know it. If it were to happen in the near future, more than two billion people will die.

One of the genocides in the bible was when the Israelites turned on some of their own people. The near extermination of the entire tribe of Benjamin by the remaining 11 tribes, triggered by the serial rape and murder of a priest's concubine by a few Benjamites. (Judges, chapter 20). This is seen as justifiable in the bible.

In modern times, genocide is generally regarded as the most serious, reprehensible, horrifying and disgusting crime of which humans are capable. Those responsible are considered to be sub-human pariahs. At first glance, there seems to be a conflict between concept of God as a loving, caring, beneficent deity, and his responsibility in causing or ordering these genocides
God is a loving god but also has to maintain discipline
These stories are parables we have to interpret them to discern their true meaning

Conservative christians tend to believe that the bible is inspired by god, inerrant and infallible. This includes the "hard passages." One of the main biblical verses supporting this belief is: 2 Timothy 3:16-17: "All scripture is given by inspiration of god, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness. That the man of god may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works." (King James Version)
