Should Gym Class Showers Be Mandatory?

When I grew up, we had to shower after gym class. Failure to shower, meant failing the class which was required to graduate. Modesty was not considered to be an issue. The result is that we had better hygiene than otherwise possible. Coaches were able to spot any apparent health or child abuse problems since we all got naked. It seems to me that we have put the cart in front of the horse by letting young boys and girls decide if they need a shower, when they have neither the knowledge or wisdom to make a sound judgment in the matter. What do you think?
