Native Australian Animals as Pets: Right or Wrong

Many Australian Animals are endangered and will possibly become extinct if they are not taken into homes and cared for as domesticated animals (thus giving their populations a chance to grow without predators). Should we (Australians) take these animals in as pets in order to save them from extinction? And in doing this, would we be changing the nature of our native animals in such a way that they may as well be extinct because they will no longer have the skills needed in the wild?
In General, based on the fact that many Australian animals are on the verge of extinction, do you think that Australians should take these animals in as pets?
