Sun would continue to try to make money as a corporation. This includes charging for products as it saw fit. This poll is an attempt to quantify the willingness of the Java / Sun community to support Sun and its product offerings.

If a sufficient amount of interest is indicated by this preliminary poll, we are prepared to take the next step in forming an open source community around Sun to support it.

We estimate there are 6 million independent and corporate Java developers throughout the world who could be affected by a Sun takeover. We are idealistically looking for each and every one of the developers to weigh in on this poll and let us know if we should proceed.

To that end, please do forward this poll to parties or individuals you think may be interested in this project or who could help raise interest in this project.
