I was recently told by my mum about a friend of hers who was at parent teachers association meeting at a girl’s secondary school near Belfast. It was a sub-group that talked about sport The gym teacher wanted to talk about the girl’s gym uniform and basically getting rid of it. The school required all girls to do gym class in maroon coloured gym knickers and a white tee shirt and the teacher had been given written instructions to enforce this. But many girls forgot their gym uniform or brought clothing that did not it the school requirements. The girls were all required to shower after class and often forgot to bring a towel. So the gym teacher wanted to simplify the uniform rules and get the school to provide the towels. Some wore gym shoes and others were in bear feet and sometimes got trodden on, so she wanted to do away with gym shoes and the girls all do gym in bear feet. Currently girls seemed to be expected to remove their underwear before putting on their gym clothes to keep their underwear clean. The teacher was not originally from Northern Ireland, but came from some country in Europe, which could have been Poland, and was fairly young and very keen and apparently spoke good English. After some debate around gym uniforms she said that it was much simpler in many parts of Europe, where girls undressed to underwear or just their knickers for gym and some even did it naked. She had gone to a girls secondary school where in the first gym class of their first week the girls all undressed to whatever underwear they were wearing and did gym it that. Some started to bring gym clothes while others continued in just underwear or just knickers and some removed their knickers and did the class naked. Some of the parents at the meeting said they had done gym in their underwear and could see this was an option. In the end they agreed the gym teacher would provide a written proposal for the next meeting. It seemed likely the group would agree that the girls could wear any sports clothing and the school would provide towels. I thought I would ask opinions about the "polish gym class uniform approach".
