School socks at secondary school

I often wonder why senior girls attending secondary school continue to wear socks with their skirts. Surely tights would be more appropriate and fashionable for 16, 17 and 18 year old girls. Socks are acceptable for more junior girls, but not for A level students. What do you think? If you are one such girl maybe you could enlighten us.
