Corporal Punishment has been re-introduced in the judicial system as a possibility instead of fines and imprisonment up to 6 months. Are you in favour of this change?

Punishment is commonly supposed to serve one or more of the following 3 purposes: Influence the offender not to commit new offences (influence could mean teach, deter or prevent) Deter others from committing the same or other offences Satisfy the victim’s and the community’s call for justice A fourth purpose could be to help the repentant offender to atone. Does fines and imprisonment or Corporal Punishment in general best influence offenders not to commit crimes again?

Are fines and imprisonment up to six months or Corporal Punishment in general better and more effectively deterring people from committing crimes?

Is the risk of going to prison for up to 6 months or receiving CP best deterring you personally from committing an offence you could be tempted to commit?

Are fines and imprisonment up to six months or Corporal Punishment best satisfying the victims and publics call for justice (would you as victim or the victim’s neighbour find it more satisfying if the offender goes to prison or if the offender receives Corporal Punishment)?

CP is fairer than fines because it is equally severe no matter the offender’s financial situation and does not cause the offender’s family harm as fines can

An offender who is sentenced to prison for petty offences and has to serve only a few months in prison will often lose the job or has an education interrupted or stopped. The offender’s loss of income and maybe job is damaging for the offender’s innocent family. An offender released from prison to a damaged social situation and maybe has lost home and family is more likely to commit new offences. Judicial Corporal Punishment does not have the same damaging social consequences as imprisonment for the offender and the offender’s family. It will be better for the offender and also the offender’s family and the society if the offender receives corporal punishment.

If you committed an offence and were sentenced for it would it then be easiest to return to a normal life as a good citizen after up to 6 months in prison or after receiving Corporal Punishment?

The votes in the first Judicial CP poll http://www.misterpoll.com/polls/485445 seem to show the females are a little more in favour of Judicial CP than males are. The votes also seem to show that more females than males would prefer to receive Judicial CP instead of going to prison and also would prefer their sons, daughters and partners/spouses to receive Judicial CP instead of going to prison for up to 6 months. Is it more damaging for a male’s than for a female’s dignity (self-respect and the respect enjoyed from others) to receive Judicial CP?

Should the judicial system reserve the use of CP for rare cases when there are extraordinary reasons to choose it or should CP be the common and ordinary punishment in most cases where the offenders used to be fined or go to prison for up to 6 months?
