1080p vs 720p

I'm looking into getting a new TV (about a 40-42 inch). And, obviously, I'm undecided about getting a 720p or a 1080p TV. I keep hearing conflicting answers about whether or not the human eye can actually tell the difference between the two. So, I'll let public opinion settle things.
