You are the fire chief of a meduium sized city (pop 250,000). The mayor (your boss) told you to hire one additional fireman. The mayor also said to choose the most qualified applicant regardless of any other circumstances. Three men applied for the job, and were given a test that tested them both physically and mentally. The first applicant is a black man who lives in the city. He is a heavy equipment operator who is about to be laid off because business is slow. He scored 94 on the test. The second applicant is of Mexican descent and lives in an inner ring suburb. He is a roofing contractor who wants to change careers to get the benefits and pension. He scored 96 on the test. The third applicant is a white man who lives in a gated community. He is an attorney and his wife is independently wealthy. He wants to join the fire department because he enjoys physical work out of doors. He scored 99 on the test. Which of the three extremely well qualified men do you hire?
