In the 50s-70s, when lesbian culture was still relatively underground, in order to get a date lesbians generally had to conform to being totally butch or totally femme. That was just the dynamic back then. Nowadays most lesbians fall somewhere in the middle ground, but I'm wondering what people would choose if they had to.

Now to add another layer: Back then, it was socially unacceptable for butches to date butches or femmes to date femmes. The only acceptable lesbian relationship was butch/femme. Does this change your response?
