Defining an atheist.

So many people have different ideas on the definition of what an atheist is. Dictionaries are of little use, as they all have quite different definitions of the term. I hope to gauge, in admittedly vague terms, the broadest consensus amongst people, whilst offering everyone the opportunity to proffer their own detailed definition. This poll is open to all, regardless of your position on the existence of a god or gods, but I do insist that each respondent identifies his or her faith, or lack of it, in order to frame how each group defines the term.
Please select the definition which is closest to your own understanding of the term 'atheist'. I have also included a box for people to state their own preferred definition, and to give explanations for their responses, if they see fit.
Someone that believes that no god or gods exist.
Someone that does not believe that a god or gods exist
Someone that denies the existence of a god or gods.
Someone that does not deny the existence of a god or gods, but lacks a belief in any.
Someone that knows that no gods exist.
Someone that does not, or cannot, know if any god or gods exist.
None of these are acceptable choices for a vague definition of an atheist.
