Do your boys swim in shorts and underwear or bathing suit?

I am a mom and since it will soon be summer I have a question if I should have my boys wear shorts with underwear to swim. What do you moms think? Last year my friend took her son to a swim party with shorts and underwear and I remember her saying they were the essentially the same as a bathing suit. I grew up with just girls in the family so I wonder what moms have their boys wear.
