Contrary to the bizarre convention in phonetic transcription, the French and Portuguese "a" is often pronounced like the short a in English, as in "cat", which is represented by the ash symbol (ligated ae) in the IPA system. It occurs in Piaf, Gall, Mas, Dacq, Kaas, etc.
