The air forces of the US, now Canada (had air force ranks before), and many other countrys use army ranks for the air force. British Community (Commonwealth is a misnomer because it means republilc) countrys usually have air force ranks for the air force. Using army ranks for the air force makes no sense and is gratuitous, confusing, and asymmetrical. Air force generals, for instance, should be called air marshals.
Sky marshals used to be called sky marshals but this was unexplicably changed to the confusing catachresis of "air marshal", but air marshal is a military rank--an air marshal is not a sky marshal and vice-versa.
