The United States as a "Good Guy"

In light of the September 11th Terrorist Attack, many people are suggesting that the United States ease its restrictions on interrogating people who are suspected of being involved in or having knowledge of pending terrorist attacks. Many have also suggested that the U.S. increase its "human intelligence" gathering and allow operatives to perform unethical acts to be let into the trusted inner circle of terrorist groups. How do you feel about these proposals? If the U.S. were to allow agents to torture people for information or assasinate innocents to be allowed into terrorist groups, would the U.S. then become as bad as its enemies, or would it simply be doing what is necessary to defend itself?
