cannibalism scenario one

A friend of mine recently returned from a trip to Mexico where he visited the ruins at Chitzen Itza. While showing the pictures of the great ball court there he explained the rules of the game as well as the fact the captain of the losing team would be sacrificed after the game, and according to some researchers possibly eaten by the winning players. This got me curious as to whether people would willingly participate in a sport where it was possible not only be slaughtered after losing a game but to end up as dinner for the other team too!
