Before any of us take the unqualified negative comemnts about spanking too seriously from Sylvia or Gincie, we should all go back and re-read the two letters from the psychiatrist which appear as part of this web site. Scroll down further than where one clicks on the poll in question (the polls for those who were and who were not spanked) and read this person's comments, including about the likes of the two women to whom I respond. The actual fact of spanking is not child abuse, save in the heads of those who have a "case" against it,

and the psychiatrist's letter clearly indicates spanked children's understandings of their experiences with the paddle, etc., as NOT being abusive when it was done under the proper conditions. Conversely, when it WAS NOT done under proper conditions, they did understand it as abusive.

Most important here: they semed to have little problem differentiating between the two. We should not have this problem, either, and should not be hoodwinked by those who do.

One psychiatrist saying it's okay doesn't automatically prove "okay, it's not damaging." I think you will find if you do your research that the majority of psychiatrists think it is not okay. Of course, then soemone will say "well psychiatrists are the problem with kids today, they're too liberal, blah blah". Some people tend to only want to hear experts when it agrees with what they believe. Then they tend to distort these views to back up their actions. But, when someone shows something to disprove it, they change their tone and say well the expert is the problem. This does not make much sense. I realize some shrinks think spanking is good. I realize some wrote books saying it was good. But, I have done extensive research on this subject as well as many others (part of my job, actually), and I can tell you THE MAJORITY feel it is not the best form of punishment. Thank you.
