Is it OK to be barefoot in PE?

In 90th I was a PE teacher in Czech. I tried recommend to my students do their lessons with bare feet. Always optionaly, not compulsary. I thought it was good choice, but only 10 - 20 % pupils obeyd my advice. Other prefered to do their lessons with trainers. I do not see why. As a boy I liked be bare feet.
Now I discovered many discussions about PE kit. It seems the students have very mixed feelings if they are asked to be bare feet. I would like to propagate idea of barefoot schools sport but at first I am interstening what do students really think about it.
