Greatest England Captain of All Time

There's been a lot of oohing and aahing about England captains lately so let's decide once and for all who should go down in history as the best ever, as well as deciding if we've got the right guy carrying the armband right now as well!!!!
Let's start with the present - have we got the right Captain right now. Pick who you think should be skippering the Three Lions at the present time, only including the latest squad as candidates
Adam Johnson
Anyone else who I've somehow missed out (remember has to be in current squad - October 2012), and if so, who?

James Milner
Jermain Defoe
Frank Lampard
Steven Gerrard
Theo Walcott

Now some England captain related questions. When David Beckham, the then Captain, shaved his hair there was outrage. Should the skipper be able to have "outrageous" hairstyles and fashion statements or should they stick to leading by example as a "safe" and respectable kind of role model?
No
Yes, wear and look like however they want
Should anyone with any kind of bad reputation, be it in recent memory or long ago, not be considered for the Captaincy? For instance, John Terry lost it over racism claims but Steven Gerrard was arrested for affray after he punched someone in a nightclub, albeit a few years ago but still while he was in the public eye.
The England captain should be perfect in every way as the next generation's role model and any kind of unsavoury incidents however long ago should stop someone being Captain.
It doesnt matter what he does off the pitch at any time, as long as he leads by example on it
While Captain he should set an example but past misdemeanours before he wore the armband should be forgiven
Should Rio Ferdinand still be in the England squad??
Yes
No
Was John Terry right to take the decision out of the FA's hands and retire before they could punish him?
No
Yes
