We had to start wearing a PE uniform in junior high. The coach held up the school gym uniform on the first day of class which was the PE tshirt, shorts, and an athletic supporter. Some of the guys didn't know what one was and most had never worn one.
The coach inspected gym uniforms during roll call every PE day by walking down the rows as we lined up. The coach would tell us to "pop our jocks" as he walked past. That meant that we had to snap the waist band on the supporter so the coach could hear it. You had to pop it loud or the coach would think you were wearing your jockeys instead of a jockstrap. If you got caught wearing jockeys, then you got cracks with a paddle in the locker room after roll call if you forgot your jock more than 2 or 3 times in the year.
