The only thing a loin cloth needs is a strip of cloth hanging don the front and a string around the waist to hold it up. Nothing needs to go between the legs or behind the butt. The cloth could be as wide as the hips, but really shouldn't be more than one to two inches wide. It should be long if necessary, but really should end less than an inch below the $%!@. For more modesty, you can use a heavy material (leather, canvas) - but ideally it should be light cotton. Perhaps the best option would simply be a ribbon, like those used on Christmas packages. You can get those one inch wide and it's light enough to move around easily. I technically provides coverage without actually doing so.
