Yes I have children of my own and only spank when absolutely necessary, do you?

Isolation usually included a spanking, but most of us would have taken a harder spanking to avoid the isolation

Yes there was quite a lot of resistance, either out of fear (with younger children) or anger (with older ones). Invariably this couldn't be allowed so the child would always be restrained and stripped and put in isolation if they fought back.

It the lounge it was either over a chair or desk or over the knee, if a kid moved then they would be held quite forceably in place, yes

If you argued or pleaded your just got more so you just had to take it. It was usually given in the main lounge rather than in private - to set an example apparently!

Isolation was in a room with nothing in it except you, you were kept naked, let out only to walk (naked) to toilet etc.

Yes we did get the strap, sometimes bare. The reaction was probably one of disgust, I hated it but had no means of stopping it unless I left the Home (and school, end of University prospects, etc), so just had to put up with it. It was particularly bad if I didn't think I had deserved it. I was also put in isolation a couple of times at that age too, for the remainder of the day and overnight.

Smoking and drinking at 18 in the UK is and was legal and as scoially acceptable as these things ever are. I didn't do either to excess, just enough to fit in with friends outside the Home. However, it was against house rules and I was beaten for it with a slipper either because a member of staff had seen me or because of second hand information. I am sure they would have said it was for love, but I think it was just strict adherence to a rule that should have been waived at that age.
