I never really thought Nixon was a bad guy. He was anti-social, but very smart. So what if he broke the law? He already resigned for it, yet his name has basically gone down in history as a bad person. There is more to life than what meets the eye, and there is a definite value in living for both yourself and others. Reaching out to your goals is enough of a reason for anyone to live.

And religion just seems to toss all that down a hole by fostering bigotry and oppression and hiding it through manipulation and false help. I'm just surprised that it has lasted for so long, despite its incredible contradictions and violent history.

It's almost started to seem to me as if the religious people are the immoral ones, not atheists (of course, that would be illogical to base morals off of faith, except when faith directly manipulates a persons actions and thought processes). I mean, whats the point in doing good for someone JUST so you can go to heaven? Why would you use fear to try and stop someone from doing bad things? If a person is pushed down by fear, they still have the thoughts, even if not the actions. It just seems as if living your life depending on something else to rule over you and making sure you do good so that a big man in the sky will pat you on the head and say "Aww, what a good little boy." then magically lift you up into his kingdom.

Atheists have morals too, and just because they live their life differently doesn't mean they should be judged for it. What truly kind god would allow his people to hurt those who don't believe, when really, humans are so insignificant it's not even funny. Humans are NOTHING to this universe. Sure, we can destroy a planet, but that took two centuries and almost seven billion of us. The Earth is a fraction of an atom in a grain of sand in a vast, vast desert that is the universe.

We don't matter. And that's okay! ;D

I'm sorry you feel that way. I'm not thoroughly educated on this matter, as I only intended to see if there was a correlation between being raised in theistic/nontheistic environments and opinions on atheists. I am aware of the many different ways of thinking though, but I never meant for this to be a real detailed poll.

Yeah, it is rather unnerving how admitting you're an atheist is basically political suicide. Atheists, even when well qualified, have the lowest chance of election according to various polls. So much for racism, people seem to judge even more on personal beliefs than looks now (maybe they always have, but there just weren't enough people who believed differently to notice? But then again look at the crusades, or the Salem witch trials).

I'm an atheist myself, and have a fairly open mind for a "sinning bastard with no right to even exist." That has actually been said to me before, shortly followed by "How dare you mock you're creator? You deserve to die and be tormented for all eternity!" I've always wondered why it provokes such a negative response. I've never been religious, except for a brief time in my childhood (where I was just believing because my friends believed, and I bet they only believed because their parents told them to believe). Being non-religious for most of my existence has left me with hardly any religious perspective, and I have trouble understanding almost all of the actions a religious person does based on faith.

Do humans desire to be ruled over so much that they have even created an invisible man in the sky that dictates what they have to do? Have we so established ourselves as inferior beings that we've decided that no matter what we do or think, we're watched, and that doing something bad would cause us to burn for eternity? What kind of sick, twisted mind would think up such horrible things! It makes no sense...

Perhaps I should have put more thought into the answers to the questions then. I apologize for that. I would change it, but I've already edited this poll a few times, and I'd prefer just letting people have as much time as possible to answer the questions.
