Good poll - thanks! But might be more informative if "barefoot" was an option for places away from home (rather than just "other).

I still go barefoot whenever I can - but I should have clarified that the "ritual" was something we practiced as teenagers in the 70s.

And yes, lots of us were barefoot all summer long, then. We went barefoot everywhere and was generally accepted as natural and normal. There was no social pressure to wear shoes - quite the opposite; most people would have wondered what was wrong if they saw us wearing shoes in the summertime!

I suppose my point was to suggest that there should be more acceptance of bare feet and shirtlessness in public circumstances, as was formerly the case. Throughout my teens I was barefoot all summer long, and shirtless for weeks at a time, as were most of my friends. It was generally accepted as natural and normal; indeed if people had seen us with shoes on they likely would have wondered what was wrong.

Yes, cutoffs are ideal - for boys and girls too. And girls of course should be encouraged to go barefoot as well.

Why a shirt or shoes? They should be encouraged to go barefoot and shirtless all summer. We did. It was great.
