Posted in Girls, are you made to wear skirts in the winter? on 2006-01-21 01:01:41

OK, I didn't mean literally that wearing trousers/pants can cause you to forget you're a girl, but it can make girls become less ladylike. They can start sitting in a slovenly way (legs apart), stop shaving their legs, lose the ability to go bare legged when it's cold etc etc.

Personally I'm happy to be female, so I don't ever want to dress in a similar way to males.

Hello everyone.

My birthday is 10 July but it won't mean any less strict uniform. I've got another year at Killicomaine school - it's a junior high. All the schools around here have skirts only for the girls and most have knee socks as well. We're the only school with gymslips though. We have to wear them every day. you can see our uniform on the website.

Mum and dad say I must stay in the uniform until I leave Killicomaine and then things will be "discussed". I don't hold out much hope tho. Until Christmas we lived in Manchester and I went to a girls grammar school there. I started off in a skirt and socks but then mum found out from the deputy headmistress that the old gymslip uniform could still be worn. She made me wear one as a punishment but then said I could stay in it - I was the only girl in a gymslip at that school at least now we're all inthe same boat.

We can wear black tights or stockings in very cold weather. The school says when. Most girls stay in socks though. My dad doesn't like us to wear tights so I have to wear stockings like my mum when I'm allowed (with a suspender belt). It's OK. At my old school some of the older girls wore stockings but here I'm the only one. At least I'm allowed them, some parents keep their girls in knee socks until they go onto to proper high school.

Strict uniforms are very common here in NI.

Outside school I can only wear skirts or dresses. If I'm naughty I'm kept in school uniform sometimes as one of my punishments. I wear stockings when it's cold and in the summer or spring I wear nylons to special events like church or a party. Again sometimes mum says I don't deserve to wear stockings as I've been bad and I have to wear socks and a short skirt like a little girl which I hate.<<

Hi Rachel,

You probably think it's unfair that your school doesn't allow trousers and your parents won't let you wear tights. It's the same for me. But I think they're doing you a favour as it's a lot healthier to dress this way. It also toughens you up and gets you used to sitting and moving in a ladylike way. So cheer up!

I went right through school with bare legs, and looking back i am really glad i was not given the choice. had i been allowed i would have chicken out some days and worn tights or trousers. but now i am able to go out bare legged in a micro skirt in any weather and to be honest i enjoy it. it makes me feel very alive, and i like the attention.<<

I agree with you, same here. I think all schools should make sure the girls stay bare legged because it's such a good preparation for later life.

No, because I'm not yet married. But I'd like a husband like you've described :-)

Maybe you should ditch the menswear and make the effort to wear skirts or dresses, Fate-Breaker.

One of the great things about them is that they steer you away from tomboy-like activities and movements. I promise you a week in a short skirt will turn you into a lot more of a lady!
