I think this is more with the American culture. Other guys, especially asian men don't have hang ups being shirtless. I have been working as peace corp in the Philippines and guys there go shirtless without abandon. They loiter around the neighborhood shirtless. They play basketball shirtless.

Today's time are very different from the way it has before. Our kids have been hearing prematurely exposed to this sex-laden world - causing them to be too anxious on their developing body and the bodies of their peers.
Maybe the boys in the country still retain the non-anxious atttitude towards nudity.
