More and more I am seeing letters to my website that show huge differences in how countries perceive going barefoot. Australia and New Zealand, and England and Germany plus the Netherlands don't seem to mind bare feet. Russia seems to have few problems. But Spain, India, Mexico, South America, and Arab nations and Indochina take a dim view of bare feet.

Americans, Australians, and some British like to put their feet up on the furniture--especially considering the coffee table a footstool as much as a table. Apparently in France, Spain, Arab and Indochina and Japan this is considered an insult.

Bush was photographed some time ago surrounded at a summit with world leaders. Bush had his feet up on the table--no others did--and apparently this gave huge offense to some leaders. I is not known whether Bush did this out of ignorance of foreign customs, or as a deliberate insult.

Anybody with any insight on any of this stuff please post.

By the way, I have learned that is is kind of dangerous to go barefoot in town in Mexico--for some reason legal authorities will be far more likely to hassle you--barefooted is not considered respectable in Mexico. In Australia and Hawaii letters and personal experience show me that going barefoot is just a clothing choice and totally accepted anywhere--or even viewed more positively than being shod.

I think it is actually a LAW that in the US state supported schools must allow students to dress as they please--including bare feet. I always go barefoot to class.

I figure it is your home and your rules. Once you explained the wheelchair thing only a real jerk would refuse to remove shoes, but asking socks too is a bit much.

A non-wheelchair person wearing shoes who demanded I take off mine would get told off quick. Actually, I go barefoot most of the time, and so do my friends, so I go in bare feet and they answer the door in bare feet. Nobody in the US wears shoes indoors much. especially if they have fancy floors.

Nicolas: I am shocked and appalled at what your parents are doing to you. I have never heard of such a thing. I think you should report them to DHS if you live in America.

I myself love going barefoot, and so do my brothers, but from choice, and we love our parents for LETTING us go barefoot all the time--which is what most kids have an issue with.

Nicolas, I am sorry that something that is so fun for most kids has been perverted into a torture for you. I think your parents are evil for doing this, and when you are grown I hope you remember this:

A parent owes his child: EVERYTHING A child owes his parents: NOTHING.

If you show this to your mom and dad I hope they repond to me and explain, because I see no excuse for any boy being tortured--and this IS torture--in such a manner. I'd buy you shoes if money were the issue I think this is so bad.
