No, I don't think of a slaughterhouse operator "as a sadist with one purpose in life; to hurt and torture animals to make a fast profit." That would be stupid.

But I suggest you do some research yourself before making a judgment call as to how terrible the realities of slaughterhouses are.

www.factoryfarm.org http://www.hsus.org/farm_animals/factory_farms/the_hen_factory_farm/

etc. If all this stuff is fake, then there are a whole lot of people working to maintain a depressing lie we'd rather not be reminded of.

Even if you think our superior intelligence puts us at the top of the food chain, you shouldn't deny that animals feel pain and fear. These two have nothing at all to do with intelligence or comprehension, and we have a responsibility to minimize both. The only way to do this is to end factory farming.

I'm not telling you to stop eating meat. I'm telling you to stop patronizing factory farms. If you've just got to have your beef, etc, get it somewhere else.

That sounds like an allergy to me. Vomiting (etc) can definitely be an allergic reaction (I know because I've had it, ew). Of course, your husband is probably more aware of whether it's an allergy or not. Has he talked to any doctors about it? What have they said? Anyway, I agree with you on the matter of whether he could take anything for it--I really doubt it as well.

I would consider his reaction to mushrooms an allergy, but even if for some medical reason it's not, he'd be welcome to categorize it as such for things like this poll!!

Alan--

I don't really feel that you took a good look at my quiz, to be honest. I put in questions focusing on ethical omnivores because I DO believe that it's okay for humans to eat meat. I won't do it and I honestly can't see what the appeal is for others, but that isn't my business. I don't have any problems with people patronizing organic farms. It's when animals are abused and tortured for purposes of quick food production that I feel obligated to pass judgement. Can't you see the difference?

You seem to be on the right track, but you're a little misled. In your post you mentioned that "many animals eat other animals, death and dying are a part of life and sometimes pain comes along with it"--well yeah, of course. However, I think that it's fair to expect that the death of a food animal be as quick and painless as possible--uncompromised by human desire for faster, cheaper food and bigger profit margins.

Thank you for offering so much veggie food at your restaurant, though. That's really very impressive.

Yep, it was Pilgrim Products or something. But being that KFC is guilty of many offenses and exists as one of Pilgrim Products' main clients, it makes sense to boycott them. As a vegan I'm technically boycotting any meat company, but it's a little easier to get the general public to focus on boycotting one of the largest, most ethically questionable restaurant franchises in the country than every individual grocery store that happens to sell PP chicken.

You rule. I'm vegan myself and though I'm not sure that I have...er, "really pretty eyes", you've done a nice job of summing things up. I sympathize with you in regards to your lack of car, by the way. I have no car myself but fortunately live very close to a natural foods store. If not for that, I'd be in a lot of trouble, food-wise. But you do your best, that's what counts.

========== In Reply To ========== I'm lacto-ovo vegetarian, and I admire Vegans.

It's hard to be completely Vegan because I sold my car when the war started... and the store that is close has imported goods and a lot of 100% Organic food, (eggs and dairy), but no good organic selection of grains, lentils, or nuts-essential Vegan ingredients. They do carry rice and soy milk, though, so I have been able to stop drinking and cooking with Milk.

I am also horrified at the thought we are genetically engineering our food. (This was one of the reasons I started eating organic, and went vegetarian.) It is really hard to be a Vegan, (I do eat Vegan quite a bit) and since they constantly sacrifice, we are all able to live a better life. Most people don't realize their ecological footprint, and how much their diet affects the rest of the population of the planet. The methane alone from large cattle farms has been linked to global warming, and as hurricanes hit Florida and the Carribian Islands, I urge that some people re-consider their diet and it's impact.

As this type of awareness sets in with a person, they begin to make better choices in all aspects of their life, like taking their own bag to the store, and walking instead of driving. (I think in other countries it's called 'self-awareness', but here in America, it happens so rarely these people are made fun of). Others mock their selfless struggle, without the awareness of what they go through, and what it takes to realize they actually care about EVERYONE.

And if that isn't our goal-every person's well being and happiness-what ARE we doing? What are we working toward when we get up everyday, and go to work??

Being Vegan would be easier if more people would try it-because then more Falafel places would go in (THE best Fast Food in Holland is at the Falafel shops-their fries are REAL, not Genetically-Engineered nasty pesticide potatoes). Then we could all help each other, and still get our fast food craving out of the way... eating vegetables is cheaper than meat, it takes less money to grow veggies! And we wouldn't have to put up with the LOW quality garbage all the fast food chains here dish out. Those places are disgusting. Read 'Fast Food Nation' and find out for yourself.

Imagine a better world for everyone... then ask yourself what you can do in your daily life to make everything better.

That's all Vegans are doing!
