My son sleeps in the same bed as me, as let me tell you there is nothing better than tickling a sleeping 9 year old awake and usually continuing to tears. My son is a really heavy sleeper, so sometimes as gently and quietly as I can I will tie his arms and legs spread eagle to the bedposts and then go crazy on him. Also, sometimes if I wake up during the middle of the night to use the bathroom or whatever, I will tickle him awake, for the sole purpose of being able to do so.
Once he's awake he also gets tickled daily for 15-20 minutes to snap him out of his grogginess. Hd also gets tickled fornfor 20-30 right before bedtime to tire him out.

I just touch it with my lips. The goal is to make him uncomfortable and gross him out, not to cause any long lasting damage. He mainly makes 'Ah!' sounds from his wide open mouth. Or he'll just be laughing because I like to tickle him under his arms while I play with his face.
